What’s the Difference Between Direct Thermal and Thermal Transfer Printing?

You may already know that there are two types of thermal labels: Direct Thermal and Thermal Transfer. But what sets them apart?

What are Thermal Transfer Labels?

Thermal transfer labels require a ribbon to print. As both the label and ribbon pass through the printer, heat is applied to the ribbon, transferring wax and resin onto the label. This method creates scratch-resistant, detailed labels that last longer. Thermal transfer printing also allows for multicolored printing since ribbons are available in colors other than black.

What are Direct Thermal Labels?

Direct thermal labels don’t need a ribbon. Instead, the printer applies heat directly to the label, causing a chemical reaction that darkens the heated areas. Think of receipt printers—this is how direct thermal labels work. While they’re more compact and cost-effective (since you don’t need a ribbon), they’re not scratch-resistant and don’t last as long, especially in warm or sunny environments. Premium direct thermal labels are somewhat scratch-resistant but still not as durable as thermal transfer labels.

How Can I Tell the Difference Between Thermal Transfer and Direct Thermal Labels?

Wondering how to distinguish between a thermal transfer label and a direct thermal label? There’s a simple test you can do.

Take the label and quickly scratch it with your fingernail, as if striking a match. If a dark mark appears, it’s a direct thermal label. If there’s no mark, it’s a thermal transfer label. Keep in mind that some coated labels may require a harder scratch to leave a visible mark.
